The Barred Owl is resident mostly east of the Missouri River, with populations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and eastern Texas.

Inhabits wooded areas, preferably with large trees. Food includes a wide variety of prey; small mammals and birds apparently make up the bulk of the diet.

The call is familiar to many; it sounds a bit like "Who cooks for you; who cooks for you-all".
