Birds

Many hundreds of species of Birds live and breed in the United States. Even more occur here, sometimes regularly, sometimes very sporadically.

Most birds can fly, and that characteristic helps them show up in places where they are not typically expected. Flight, along with a sensible wariness of humans, also makes bird photography challenging. Usually, a photo-worthy bird is long gone before I can even find my camera.

I haven't the patience or skill to set up blinds, the money to afford telephoto lenses, or the heart to stake out nests and potentially disturb birds that already face too many challenges to raising their next generation.

So, most of my images are of captive birds, or of birds in environments - like the Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park - where they are very used to the presence of humans.
