American Basswood
Tilia americana

American Basswood occurs from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri eastward. It grows up to eighty feet tall. The leaves are somewhat heart-shaped. Basswood are often planted in urban areas, though I found this particular tree at a state park in north-central Indiana. The wood sees use in furniture, and Native Americans used the inner bark to make rope. The flowers are special favorites of honeybees. Member of the Basswood (or Linden) family.
